On visiting New York

When I left New York City to move back to California, it was in part, because as an avid cyclist I found it difficult to navigate the city and felt walled in by concrete. Recently I returned to find that the city had changed dramatically. Two years ago when I had visited, the City Bikes seemed to be a joke. Now they were actually being used, and not just by tourists. Who could have predicted that there would be bike lanes, there would be bike-shares, and that the city would become much more bike-friendly? The city, if not developing an Amsterdam-style love of bicycles, has developed a system of active tolerance. It made me happy. June 2016
